Since CAT results are out (today on 11/01/2012), few of you will be now trying to understand the difference between PGDM and MBA. You might be planning to join some Business Management college now. I think those who are seeking admission to management courses doesn't know the proper difference between PGDM and MBA. It is very important to know the difference as it might help you to decide which type of college you want to pursue your management education in.
MBA is the degree given by those management institutes which are affiliated to Universities. For ex., Oxford College of Business Administration, Bangalore is affiliated to Bangalore University and since it is affiliated to B'lore University, it can give MBA degree certificate and not PGDM.
Take IIMs, Kirloskar Institute of Advanced Management Studies, Amrita College (Coimbatore), XLRI etc.. are autonomous and not affiliated to any University. Such colleges which have authority to give degree certificate on their own (autonomous) can give only PGDM certificates. These colleges have got permission to run on their own since they have the capacity equivalent to a University.
But there are few other colleges like ICFAI colleges (except Hyderabad and B'lore branch) which doesn't have any sort of recognition and they themselves claim that they give their own degree certificates, maybe PGDM and you must avoid taking admission into such colleges (colleges which are neither autonomous nor AICTE approved will make you look like that you are in Thrishanku state after your degree). You will regret having studied in such colleges as these have come up with only one objective - make hay while the sun shines. They are out there just to cash-in the hype.
Try to join good autonomous colleges which give PGDM and only then think of joining MBA Degree Colleges.
